Swim For Life® Schools Challenge
The following guidelines are a basis for teachers and/or swim teachers
to use when undertaking the challenge.
- Swimmers are required to complete 200m by swimming freestyle,
backstroke, and breaststroke or survival strokes. The survival
strokes may consist of sidestroke or survival backstroke. The
strokes must be recognisable. A combination of the above strokes may
also be used.
- The swimmer must touch the wall upon completion of each length
and at the finish of 200m.
- When turning the swimmer must make physical contact with the end
of the pool. The turn must be made from the wall and the swimmer is
not permitted to take steps or stride from the pool floor. The turn
should be immediate.
- Standing on the bottom during the swim is not permitted.
Children should be encouraged to revert to energy saving survival
strokes if fatigued.
- Pulling on the lane rope or along the wall is not allowed.
- In all cases the swimmer is not allowed to use or wear any
device that may aid the swimmers speed, buoyancy or endurance during
the 200m (such as webbed gloves, fins, flippers, pull buoys etc.)
Goggles are permitted.
Risk Analysis Management Systems – Teachers should be aware of
‘site-specific’ risks or potential hazards for swimming and should
complete their own risk management assessment in accordance with the
Ministry of Education’s EOTC guidelines. Teachers may wish to view and
link examples via the New Zealand Handbook (SNZ HB 8669:2004) Guidelines
for Risk Management in Sport and Recreation, which can be obtained via
Standards New Zealand.
