Swim For Life has built on the successes of Water Safety
New Zealand (WSNZ)’s Lotto
Take The Plunge™ event in raising the awareness of the importance of
learning to swim and created increased opportunities for New Zealanders
to learn to swim. It is the national flagship for the promotion of this
core-life skill required by all New Zealanders.
Primarily a social marketing initiative Water
Safety New Zealand (WSNZ) is seeking to promote action in our communities through increasing
awareness of the importance of this core-life skill, reducing barriers
and using persuasion to motivate participation in learning to swim.
Specifically we want to;
Increase awareness of the importance of the issue and its
relevance for all New Zealanders;
Change attitudes and promote more positive behaviour with regard
increased opportunities to learn to swim and a subsequent increase
in swimming ability.
Purpose
Every New Zealand child by the age of 12 will be able to swim 200m
confidently and competently with associated survival skills and
understand key water safety messages.
Partners
WSNZ will utilise its industry experience and expertise to develop
and deliver a credible water safety message to the community centred on
learning to swim. Significant partnerships exist with the New Zealand
Recreation Association, Swim Coaches and Teachers
Association of New Zealand and Swimming New Zealand, they are the national organisations charged with learn to
swim delivery in New Zealand.
The Benefits of Swim For Life
The entire New Zealand community will benefit from the initiative.
Not only are there benefits from a water safety perspective through
decreases in both drownings and aquatic based injuries but there will
also be a positive health impact from increased physical activity.
The ability to swim is proven to increase self-esteem among children
and opens to them a broad range of aquatic based activities and pursuits
that can be enjoyed throughout their lifetime.
Linking Swim For Life to the Community
November 2007 marked the beginning of the national Swim For Life
public awareness campaign. This summer we have introduced radio to the
mix and also tinkered with the TVC by adding a voice over which
delivers our call to action.
